Polylactic Acid (PLA) is a biodegradable material with clarity and rigidity similar to that of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or polystyrene (PS). Polylactic acid is one of the best products in emerging bioplastic market due to its cost structure and availability. PLA is produced using renewable source such as carbohydrate and starch cellulose which can be obtained from various vegetables and crops. These players use various strategies such as mergers & acquisition, joint venture, product launches, partnership etc. to expand market share globally. For instance, in Nov. 2016, Corbion & Total entered into joint venture agreement. The energy firm “Total” and bio-based leader “Corbion” are combining forces to improve bioplastics by generating a 50/50 joint venture to market and produce polylactic (PLA) polymers. These two partners planned to create a PLA polymerization plant with production capacity of 75,000 tons each year at Thailand’s Corbion's site which has a lactide (PLA monomer) manufacturing unit that will become part of joint venture. Corbion will deliver the lactic acid essential for the PLA production and the lactide.
